Sweet Pond is about finding a way to live in a sustainable and responsible manner.
We believe that we must preserve not only the quality of our environment but the health of our communities and relationships. We look to the principles of cohousing as a model on which to live in a more supportive and friendly environment.
Cohousing is one of the most common of the many models for intentional communities. It is often associated with the communes of the 1960s but is much more closely related to a family farm or a cooperative. People join cohousing so that they can be closer to their neighbors and live with others who share common ideals and values. These vary among groups but some common ones are equality, social justice, environmental concern, and the preservation of community life.
Cohousing communities vary greatly in their forms but they are based around the idea of neighbors working together to conserve resources, develop strong relationships, and live in a more sustainable way. Communities typically do this by maintaining and managing their property together, coming together for meals and celebrations, and working cooperatively to reduce the expenditure of resources and resulting impact on the earth.
If you are unfamiliar with Cohousing the best place to start is The Cohousing Association of the United States. Their website contains excellent information on the cohousing model, history, and the many communities around the country.
